Lubbock, Texas: The Giant Side of Texas

Lubbock, Texas image by Billy Hathorn on Wikimedia Commons Situated on the plains of northwestern Texas, the foundations for the city of Lubbock were laid as early as 1876, when a Confederate Colonel by the name of Lubbock arrived. The city itself was created by a merger of two small towns in 1890, where the town of Old Lubbock (including its hotel!) migrated several miles to the town site of Monterey. From this interesting history springs the city we know today: Lubbock, Texas, hub city for the South Plains region and home to over 217,000 people.

Lubbock, TX is located in an area that is famous for its cotton growing, and many people who live in or near the city are involved in this industry in some way. However, you can't exactly grow cotton in the middle of an urban area, so Lubbock has other means of support as well. They come from the education, health care, technology, and retail sales sectors. The among the city's largest employers are the city government and the public school system as well as Texas Tech University, two major hospitals, a supermarket chain, and a telecommunications giant.

The city's biggest attractions are monuments to the history of the region. There's the National Ranching Heritage Center, the Canyon Lakes Archaeological District, the National Cowboy Symposium, and a cultural center named for local legend Buddy Holly. For the kids, there's the Joyland Amusement Park and an IMAX theater, while more today-oriented people might like to take in a Texas Tech football game or do a night on the town in the Depot District.

The Lubbock, TX Real Estate Market

Barton House in Lubbock, TX image by Billy Hathorn on Wikimedia Commons Many Canadians have realized that given the depressed state of many U.S. housing markets, it's time to put up their condominium for rent in Toronto and invest in property down south. A look at Lubbock, Texas housing prices shows you how this can be a great idea for Americans with available capital as well. Listing prices are around $210,000 while the median sales price is only $81,000. Overall, this is a decrease of more than 13% from last year, though the decline is expected to level off soon as recession repairing measures are enacted worldwide.

The low housing prices shouldn't fool you into thinking that the homes here aren't up to snuff, however. Lubbock, TX still has the same wide open blue sky and far-reaching plains it has always had. The homes are still a mixture of contemporary and historic styles, with especial emphasis on Spanish Colonial stylings because of the way they compliment the landscape. The difference is that their former owners are no longer able to afford them, a change that has occurred so quickly that the houses themselves haven't had time to fall into disrepair.

Different neighborhoods will be able to command different prices. Some of the most popular are the brand new subdivision homes that were erected before the recession hit while others are historic homes near the center of the city. There are 43 neighborhoods altogether. Among the most popular with buyers right now are Harwell ($49,000), Ballenger ($56,000), Clapp Park ($63,000), Stubbs-Stewart ($78,000), Northridge ($116,000), Bayless Atkins ($130,000), and Preston Smith ($168,000).
